NFL Super Bowl Odds and Betting

Moneyline/Straight Bets

Also known as a straight bet, the moneyline bet is when you simply pick who will win the game. The points don’t matter in this bet. As long as you pick the winner, you receive a payout.

When looking at moneyline odds, you’ll see a “+” and “-” beside the odds. The “+” tells you who the underdog is while the “-” is for the favorite.

Points Spread

The score does matter with this bet. You either pick the favorite (team with – points) or the underdog (team with + points).

Let’s take a look at the Super Bowl point spread as our example. At the time of this writing, most sportsbooks have the Philadelphia Eagles as 1.5-point favorites, which you’ll see written as -1.5. On the flip side, you’ll see Kansas City +1.5. You’re basically adding or subtracting points from the team’s final score, depending on which side you bet.

This means that if you’re betting on the Eagles, they need to win by two or more points for your wager to hit. If Kansas City were to lose by one point or win the game outright, Chiefs bettors would win.

Totals

Sportsbooks list their guess at the total number of points scored in a game between both teams. You can place a bet that the score will be over or under the listed point total. Totals can be set for quarters and halves in addition to the full game.

For Super Bowl 57, the total was 50.5 on BetMGM Sportsbook. If you’re betting the over, you need the Chiefs and Eagles to combine for at least 51 points to win. Under bettors need the two teams to combine for 50 or fewer points to hit their bet.

Parlay Bets

Parlay bets include combining multiple wagers, all of which must win for you to receive a payout. Typically, parlays are between two or more different games, such as a moneyline bet on the Arizona Cardinals parlayed with a point total bet on a separate game.

The Super Bowl is different, however, as we’re only considering one game. Many sportsbooks now offer same game parlays, allowing you to combine bets on a single game. When looking at your favorite sportsbook app, you can typically tell which bets you can combine into a same game parlay by the “SGP” or “OGP” marker next to the bet in question. You can also find pre-made same game parlays on most platforms.

Parlays allow for the potential of higher payouts but are riskier due to needing all of your bets to hit. Here’s an example:

  • Patrick Mahomes under 293.5 passing yards
  • Miles Sanders over 59.5 rushing yards
  • Kansas City Chiefs +1.5

All of these wagers involve Super Bowl 57 and you would need all of them to hit in order to have a winning parlay.

What is an NFL Futures Bet?

A futures bet is a wager placed in which the outcome typically isn’t known until later in the season. For the Super Bowl, this would be wagers on the winner of the big game and the MVP. Once we reach the playoffs, you can also place bets on which teams will be playing in Super Bowl 2024.

You can also place NFL futures bets on markets such as win totals and AFC/NFC Champion as well as season-long stats for multiple positions, such as the number of touchdowns a quarterback will have or how many rushing yards a running back will record.

What is a Super Bowl Prop Bet?

A Super Bowl prop bet is when you bet on events that don’t necessarily reflect the outcome of the game. These bets are incredibly popular for the Super Bowl as there will be an endless amount of prop bets on almost every sportsbook.

You can quite literally find Super Bowl prop bets from before the game starts until after the game is over. Popular prop bets include the length of the National Anthem, result of the coin toss, and what color of Gatorade.

How Super Bowl Betting Odds are Calculated

Super Bowl bets are calculated by using American odds. American odds use plus (+) and minus (-). The plus is how much you will win if you bet $100. The minus is how you need to bet to win $100. The favorite is always the team with the higher minus number or the lower plus number. The underdog is the team with the highest plus number and lower minus number.

Let’s look at Super Bowl 2023 moneyline odds to illustrate an example.

Philadelphia Eagles (-125)

Kansas City Chiefs (+105)

In this example, the Eagles are the favorites. To win $100 on Philadelphia, you’d need to bet $125. For the Chiefs, betting $100 would result in a total payout of $205 (stake + winnings).

Don’t worry too much about these calculations. When you type in the amount you want to wager on an online sportsbook, it will automatically show you how much you stand to win before you place the bet.

What Impacts Super Bowl Odds?

Odds can change at the drop of a hat due to many factors, not just throughout the game, but the entire season.

  • Injuries – This would be the most common thing to impact Super Bowl odds. If a team suffers a major injury, this would cause a huge swing in odds. Imagine if the Cardinals were playing without Kyler Murray.
  • Matchups – The strengths and weaknesses of each team are taken into account for all lines and odds offered by sportsbooks. If a team with a prolific passing offense were facing off against a bottom-ranked passing defense, that would surely be reflected in the odds.
  • Betting action – The number of people who bet on the teams at a sportsbook can shift the odds one way or another. You’ll commonly hear this referred to as “public money” and will generally be seen the closer we get to Super Bowl Sunday and the more relaxed fans get their bets in.
We saw this take place when Super Bowl 2023 odds were initially released. The Chiefs opened as favorites and that was quickly flipped to the Eagles due to the amount of money coming in in favor of Philadelphia. Sportsbooks had to adjust the lines to protect their bottom line.

How To Place Online Super Bowl Bets In Arizona

Arizona allows anyone in the state that is at least 21 years old to sign up for a sports betting account at any sportsbook that has been licensed by the state.

Register

To get started, register with a sportsbook. As long as you are 21 years old, you can register anywhere, but the app will use GPS to ensure bets are being placed within state lines.

Check out a variety of different sportsbook apps and browse the bonuses and perks they offer. Registering with a couple of different sportsbooks will give you options when betting on the Super Bowl.

The registration process is simple and generally the same across each sportsbook. All you have to do is provide some personal information in order to verify your identity, including your name, address, and social security number.

Deposit Money And Bet

Most sportsbooks accept several different deposit methods to fund your account. The two most popular ways to deposit money are e-wallets, such as PayPal, or linking a checking account.

Cash Out Winnings

Withdrawing money and cashing out your winnings is as simple as making a deposit, with the exception of credit cards. If you deposit money into a sportsbook account with a credit card, you won’t be able to withdraw to that account. In this case, the sportsbook may require you to make a deposit using a different method so it can then be withdrawn to that account.
