NFL Super Bowl Odds and Betting
Moneyline/Straight Bets
Also known as a straight bet, the moneyline bet is when you simply pick who will win the game. The points don’t matter in this bet. As long as you pick the winner, you receive a payout.
Points Spread
The score does matter with this bet. You either pick the favorite (team with – points) or the underdog (team with + points).
Let’s take a look at the Week 1 matchup between the Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs as an example.
Team | Points Spread |
---|---|
Kansas City Chiefs | -3 |
Arizona Cardinals | +3 |
The Cardinals are the underdog in this matchup, as noted by the +3 above. This means if you placed a bet on the Cardinals’ points spread, your wager would result in a win if they lost by two or fewer points, or won outright. Any loss by four or more points would result in a loss. If the score happened to be exactly a three point difference, your bet would be considered a “push” and the amount you bet would be returned to your account.
Totals
Sportsbooks list their guess at the total number of points scored in a game between both teams. You can place a bet that the score will be over or under the listed point total. Totals can be set for quarters and halves in addition to the full game.
Parlay Bets
Parlay bets include combining multiple wagers, all of which must win for you to receive a payout. Typically, parlays are between two or more different games, such as a moneyline bet on the Arizona Cardinals parlayed with a point total bet on a separate game.
The Super Bowl is different, however, as we’re only considering one game. Many sportsbooks have started to offer same game parlays, allowing you to combine bets on a singular game.
Parlays allow for the potential of higher payouts but are riskier due to needing all of your bets to hit.
What is an NFL Futures Bet?
A futures bet is different than bets on a single game. Instead, it is a bet on a game that will take place in the future, such as the Super Bowl. Not only can you bet on the winner of the Super Bowl with a futures bet, but you can also place a bet on which teams you think will face off in the big game.
What is a Super Bowl Prop Bet?
A Super Bowl prop bet is when you bet on events that don’t necessarily reflect the outcome of the game. These bets are incredibly popular for the Super Bowl as there will be an endless amount of prop bets on almost every sportsbook. You can find Super Bowl prop bets from before the game until after the game, literally. Popular prop bets include the length of the National Anthem, result of the coin toss, which color of Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach, and who will win Super Bowl MVP.
The options are endless and get more creative each year.
How Super Bowl Betting Odds are Calculated
Super Bowl bets are calculated by using American odds. American odds use plus (+) and minus (-). The plus is how much you will win if you bet $100. The minus is how you need to bet to win $100. The favorite is always the team with the higher minus number or the lower plus number. The underdog is the team with the highest plus number and lower minus number.
Let’s take a look at an example.
Arizona Cardinals -150
Seattle Seahawks +250
In this example, the Cardinals are the favorites. To win $100 on the Cardinals, you’d need to bet $150. For the Seahawks, betting $100 would result in a $250 payout.
Don’t worry too much about these calculations. When you type in an amount at an online sportsbook, it will automatically show you how much you stand to win before you place the bet. You can type in $1 or $5,000, and the sportsbook will automatically populate the winning side.
Still, it’s important to know how the odds work to ensure you’re placing the right bet.
What Affects Super Bowl Odds?
Odds can change at the drop of a hat due to many factors, not just throughout the game, but the entire season.
- Injuries – This would be the most common thing to impact Super Bowl odds. If a team suffers a major injury, this would cause a huge swing in odds. Imagine if the Cardinals were playing without Kyler Murray.
- Matchups – The strengths and weaknesses of each team are taken into account for all lines and odds offered by sportsbooks. If a team with a prolific passing offense were facing off against a bottom-ranked passing defense, that would surely be reflected in the odds.
- Betting action – The number of people who bet on the teams at a sportsbook can shift the odds one way or another. You’ll commonly hear this referred to as “public money” and will generally be seen the closer we get to Super Bowl Sunday and the more relaxed fans get their bets in.
How To Place Online Super Bowl Bets In Arizona
Arizona allows anyone in the state that is at least 21 years old to sign up for a sports betting account at any sportsbook that has been licensed by the state.
Register
To get started, register with a sportsbook. As long as you are 21 years old, you can register anywhere, but the app will use GPS to ensure bets are being placed within state lines.
Check out a variety of different sportsbook apps and browse the bonuses and perks they offer. Registering with a couple of different sportsbooks will give you options when betting on the Super Bowl.
The registration process is simple and generally the same across each sportsbook. All you have to do is provide some personal information in order to verify your identity, including your name, address, and social security number.
Deposit Money And Bet
Most sportsbooks accept several different deposit methods to fund your account. The two most popular ways to deposit money are e-wallets, such as PayPal, or linking a checking account.
Cash Out Winnings
Withdrawing money and cashing out your winnings is as simple as making a deposit, with the exception of credit cards. If you deposit money into a sportsbook account with a credit card, you won’t be able to withdraw to that account. In this case, the sportsbook may require you to make a deposit using a different method so it can then be withdrawn to that account.
